7 PRINCIPLES OF SAMURAI That Will Change How You Live Your Life


1. Rectitude (義 gi) Basically what this was defined as was the ability to tell right from wrong. A simplified version of describing this characteristic is a strong moral compass.

2. Courage (勇気 yuuki). The samurai saw this as specifically acting on one's rectitude. Doing what was perceived as right was often what samurai considered courage.

3. Mercy(仁 jin) The samurai were expected to be as capable of sparing life as the were of taking it away.
ㅤㅤ
4. Politeness (礼儀 reigi) It was expected of samurai to have a general regard for the feelings of others and likewise to respect and be courteous towards those feelings.

5. Honesty (正直 shoujiki) Samurai were expected not to lie and be honest, not to act for material gain and be straightforward with people.

6. Honor(名誉 meiyo). Samurai were expected to uphold the dignity and worth of oneself, their lord, and their family.

7. Loyalty (忠義 chuugi). One was expected to be loyal to one who they were indebted to, but above all they were expected to be loyal to their superiors and lord.
